Gerald A. Willey papers, 18 Sep 1993, n.d.

General description of the collection: The Gerald A. Willey Papers contains his completed Korean War Veterans Survey Questionnaire, as well as photocopies of his personnel documents, photocopies of news clippings on himself and other Ohio veterans, and photocopies of his letters to various government officials. In his questionnaire, Willey describes his training as incomplete, especially in weapons training. He states that he found "no really good leadership" from either officers or non-commissioned officers, and that weapons and equipment in Korea were inferior. Willey believes that the Korean Augmentation to the U.S. Army (KATUSAs) were a mistake; he believes that they took advantage of the U.S., and contributed to poor morale and low combat effectiveness. He makes negative comments about "Puerto Rican Communists." In contrast, he describes the Chinese troops as well trained, well led and well armed. Willey found non-Army news correspondents to be a nuisance. He disagrees with the removal of MacArthur, and with the decision to fight a limited war. He also describes military-civilian relations and prostitution, his solution for winter footgear, and the effects of the personnel rotation system. Willey experienced great difficulty adjusting to civilian life, finding it difficult to find and keep a job. He enjoys the comradeship and information from his veteran's organizations. Willey believes that the Army is a good experience for everyone.
